Canine Hero gets Reward

A four legged veteran from Thompson's Station was honored Friday with a rare medical treatment intended to improve her quality of life. Bailey, a 14-year-old black labrador retriever that helped rescue victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attck on the Pentagon, received stem cell therapy to help relieve pain from debilitating arthritis in her elbows. Dr. Mary Ergen owner of Companion Animal Hospital, performed the rare procedure in which stem cells were injected into Bailey's elbows. Dr. Ergen, and Katherine Wilkie of MediVet America joined together to donate their services and equipment for the procedure. The procdure itself has good results, because Bailey's own stem cells from her body fat are used. The pain from the arthtitis in her elbows will hopefully be eliminated so there will not be an need to mask the pain with anitinflammatory drugs or giving her a steroid, which can have undesirable side effects if used long term.
Companion Animal Hospital is a certified CAT Friendly Practice We have taken the proper steps in becoming a certified CAT Friendly Practice by creating a practice that values the feline patient's distinct needs in both the physical environment of the practice and the way in which medical care is delivered. Tail docking is the surgical removal of part of the tail. This procedure is most often performed in healthy puppies between 2 to 5 days of age. A similar procedure may be performed in older pets, but this is considered a tail amputation, not a tail dock.
